Diablo III
Diablo III is a single-player game with co-op as an added benefit. The online features are secondary to the game’s core. We know this because it’s the third game in a franchise where single-player has always been the bloody, beating heart of things.
But this didn’t stop Blizzard from making two very peculiar decisions: first, the real-money Auction House (which is shutting down now) and second, a persistent internet connection requirement to ensure the Auction House wasn’t hacked.
Like Electronic Arts, of course, Blizzard pointed out other apparent benefits of an always-online requirement, including the game utilizing server-side processing. But the fact is, the online requirement was a recipe for disaster. While an online requirement makes perfect sense for an MMO, for a single-player game it’s simply asking for trouble. And notably, no such requirement made it into the game’s console port.
The now-infamous Error 37 message meant that hordes of the 10 million people who purchased the game couldn’t even log in to play…for hours…for days.
There was no “Play Offline” option available, so people waited and grumbled and ultimately the game suffered for it in ways that I’m not sure it will ever recover from, no matter how much Blizzard works to improve it which, to their credit, they’ve been doing for months.
A bad launch can be more than just a hassle for gamers. It can be a breach of trust. A truly online game with some launch issues is forgivable up to a point; a single-player game that won’t work because the servers are down…not so much.
