SimCity 5

You wouldn’t think a single-player game like SimCity would have any launch issues. But SimCity 5 was only mostly single-player.

EA decided to make the game online-only, meaning that even to play without any of the multiplayer features gamers would need to be connected to the internet.

It also meant consumers would need to rely on EA servers in order to play, and this quickly turned into a disaster to rival any in the game itself.

This was all necessary, the game developers argued, because SimCity used server-side data to make the game function. Only, that wasn’t true.

After some enterprising hackers revealed that the game could run just fine offline, EA backtracked.

It was embarrassing for the company and frustrating to the 1 million plus customers who purchased the game in its first two weeks.

Electronic Arts could have learned lessons from another game that launched the year before…
